The Popov dynasty

In our quest of spotting the most promissing badminton talents – we found Toma Jr & Christo Popov from France. They are from a family with proud traditions within the world of Badminton.

In the Popov family there is the father Thomas – a hot favourite for the title in the V2 category (age 41-45) – and his brother Mihail in the V1 category (age 35-40).

And then there are Thomas’ two sons, following in the footsteps of their father and uncle.

Toma Jr. and Christo already have several French championship titles under their belts, and their results augur a bright future on the international scene. In both an individual and a team capacity the pair have excelled themselves at the European championships, with Toma Jr. silver medallist at the European Senior Team Championships, while Christo picked up the men’s doubles title in the European U15 Championships, and emerged Vice-Champion in the Singles. As you can imagine, this delighted their trainer – none other than their father Thomas Popov.

‘I played in and then trained the national team in Bulgaria before coming to Fos-sur-Mer,’ says Thomas Popov who still trains the first team of his club in the 1st Division Top 12.

A fine family history, which has only just begun…
